TomTom Windscreen Mount

The TomTom name has become synonymous with GPS navigation and they have been one of the pioneers in the industry. Since starting in Amsterdam in 1991, when TomTom was known as Palmtop, the company has changed their name and focused their energies on navigation.

As GPS navigation was coming online in the 1990's, they began developing the TomTom windscreen mounted in-car receiver, to take advantage of this new technology. As the market grew, TomTom continued to enhance their product line with the introduction of the TomTom GO 510 and the GO 910 in 2006.

The 510 was created to be a very durable and reliable basic model. The 910 included many new features including Bluetooth® connectivity for mobile phones, text to voice for messaging, built-in mp3 player and remote control.

As the mobile GPS units became popular, manufacturers were challenged to create an easy way to mount them in vehicles. This led to the invention of the TomTom windscreen mount and this concept has changed little since its inception. The idea is really quite simple. By using the properties of soft plastic and a little moisture, a vacuum can be created to hold these mounts in place on the windscreen.

The other end of the mount is specifically designed to hold the TomTom Go 510 or Go 910 in place. The ability to easily attach and detach the TomTom unit was an added consideration for security purposes. The obvious advantage to the driver was the ability to see the GPS unit and still keep their eyes on the road.

Unfortunately, whether through attrition due to use, or as the result of an accident, these mounts can be broken. But take heart, reasonably priced replacements for accessories such as TomTom windscreen mounts can be found. Should the worst case scenario happen and we are left doing a juggling act while trying to drive, new mounts can easily be located on the internet.

Four years is a long time in the GPS navigation arena and it is a testament to the quality of the TomTom GPS units that they are still selling in the marketplace. Not only are they still in use, but finding accessories like the TomTom windscreen mount are just a click away.
